MERCIFUL

private daryl dixon.

Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step.

Silence filled the space between them
as her wide eyes looked up at him.
He glanced over her form making sure
she didn’t hurt herself in the struggle.
His hand removed from her face and
gently found itself on her arm. He
backed up to give her space and let her
breathe. Once he saw that she was
physically okay, his face went
expressionless and he took a seat
next to her on the bed.

When she crashed into him
he stayed still. He didn’t know
what do to do, and he learned
that sometimes the best thing to
do was nothing at all.

“What’re ya doin’?” he asked,
arms lifting up as she checked
him over.

It took her a few moments to
find her voice. She was still
half asleep and the darkness
made her unsure of purity of
his skin. The rational part of her
mind told her that he was
unharmed, however, so she
eventually relaxed and slumped
into his arms, pulling them
around her securely.

”I had a nightmare. Was in the kitchen
and you came home. You got bit.”

Just thinking about the dream
made goosebumps erupt all
over her skin. She swallowed
and turned her head slightly
to bury her face in his shoulder,
forgetting for the time being that
her cheeks were streaked with
the wetness of tears.

“Jus’ a dream.”

He didn’t say much more
than that. He couldn't
promise it would never
happen, he couldn’t
deny that it was an
upsetting nightmare.
He simply let silence
surround them, enjoying
the moment for what it was
worth.
